Over the past 20 to 30 years there has been a consistently increasing number of people looking for alternatives to medically established approaches. Hypnotherapy holds a unique position in this state of affairs due to it's popularity not only with that proportion of the public searching out alternatives but those who are not so alternatively minded. Most holistic or complementary therapies cannot make this claim. Hypnosis was popular in the conservative1950's when the medical doctor was supreme and alternative or complimentary therapy virtually did not exist in any viable form. The reason for this was that in 1958 the American Medical Association approved hypnosis as a valid therapy for use in Medicine and Dentistry. At the present time the line between the two formerly opposing views is getting thinner and many complimentary therapies including hypnotherapy are now becoming mainstream. We cannot imagine a better time to attain the appropriate skills to practice in this burgeoning field.

For students who want to become Hypnotherapists with no previous background in the health care field

At the Orca Institute we do not subscribe to the rhetoric that you might read elsewhere. We will not tell you that you will make $ 150.00 per hour, initially $50.00 is more realistic. We also will not tell you that you will have more clients than you know what to do with because at the beginning that will most likely not be the case. Two to three clients a day would be a more realistic goal.

However, we promise to do our absolute best in teaching you effective and innovative hypnotherapy and counseling skills and offer our extensive experience to support you in your learning. Whether you are taking our onsite or Distance Learning course you get the same personal attention throughout the course and someone is always accessible to respond to any questions you might have.We also enjoy helping our graduate students set up and promote their practice whether it be onsite or online and whenever possible stay in touch with them after they complete our training. For students who want to become Hypnotherapists with a background in the health care field

Many of our students have come from the field's of Medicine, Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, Massage Therapy and Counseling. In 1988 Elizabeth Smith, R.S.W., a social worker at the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia in Vancouver and one of our students, requested of their board that upon certification at The Orca Institute she would like to set up a program using hypnosis with cancer patients. The board approved the request and they now have a Department of Hypnotherapy based on her work and our training. The use of Hypnotherapy as a compliment to other therapies and approaches has grown exponentially since then (1988). As an adjunct to your present practice you will find that this approach fits very well as not only a compliment to but as an enhancement to your present modality. As a Registered Massage Therapist once said to us, "this is the part I've been missing".
