Instructor: JOE SOLANTO, PhD.

This course will build on the foundation established in Phase 1 and 2. Following the establishment of safety for trauma victims (as introduced in Phase 1 and 2), practitioners can address the troubling post-traumatic symptoms and begin the work of assisting the client at integrating the traumatic experience in meaningful ways using a variety of approaches.

In Phase 3 we will explore ways to use imagery as well as some forms of expressive therapy in helping clients to manage flashbacks, nightmares, dissociation, anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviours, and anger. We will then utilize these approaches to help the client reconnect with “self”, counter negative beliefs, re-establish trusting relationships, and search for new meaning. The issue of “forgiveness” will be discussed as it relates to trauma recovery.

Finally we will review the notion of “vicarious trauma” as it affects helping professionals and practice some tools for guarding against the potential for indirect harm.

This course will be videotaped with the intention of creating a Distance Learning DVD course. If a student has not completed either one or both of the previous weekends video CD's will be made available to meet the pre-requisites for this course. Please inquire.
